Ever since Huynh Gia Tuan was little, he already found himself connecting with music. After moving to America in 1997, Tuan has been putting efforts in developing his talents in singing, dancing and designing to a professional level. In 1998, Tuan won his first singing contest with the song “Loi Ve Dat Me” at a Moon Festival competition between many local high schools. With Tuan's genuine vocal and unique performance, he maintained the first place position throughout his 4 years of high school with songs such as “Ban Toi”, “Thuong Ve Mien Trung”, etc.

An only child, born in Dong Nai, Vietnam, Tuan arrived in the USA at the age of 13 under the sponsorship of his father in 1997. At the tender age of 3, Tuan has found a passion for performing and has been actively performing at colleges, universities, temples and churches at the later age until now. His many achievements include winning first place in the Spring Festival 2005 singing contest with the song “Chuyen Nguoi Dan Ba 2000 Nam Truoc”. With the help of his adopted mother and the talented composer Huynh Nhat Tan, Tuan recently sent a demo to the prestige Trung Tam Thuy Nga and made his debut appearance in PBN 84, titled “Passport to Music and Fashion”.

Besides singing contests and performing at occasional events, Tuan also participated in many local Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) Cultural shows. In 2003, Tuan became the show coordinator of the De Anza College VSA. Being a show coordinator, Tuan introduced his set of Ao Dai fashion designs at the show for the first time. Tuan created his own style by combining the traditional elements of Ao Dai with modern design. "I want to create and enhance the beauty of Asian American women with both eastern and western values" he said. "I have the chance to be educated with both Asian and Western values and I think that's very important for the new generation", Tuan added. His works certainly brought a new image to the traditional Ao Dai. Starting Paris by Night 72 produced in 2004, Tuan has been designing Ao Dai for Paris by Night singers. He has also been a designer for singers including Nhu Quynh, Phi Nhung, Tam Doan, Luong Tung Quang, The Son, and many others.

With strong talents in art, Tuan has been majoring in Fashion Design and transferring from De Anza College to 4-year-university. Armed with talents and passions in art and music, Huynh Gia Tuan would certainly bring to the Vietnamese Music industry some new energy.

HGT - Hẹn Gặp Bạn Trên Hành Trình Của Tôi Phát hiện mới nhất của Paris By Night (PBN) đã có cuộc trò chuyện với ThuyNgaOnline sau hậu trường khi anh chờ đến phần trình diễn lần đầu tiên trên sân khấu của mình trong chương trình PBN 84 thu hình tại Atlanta. Trước đó, tôi cũng đã nghe nói ít nhiều về chàng ca sỹ trẻ này, kể cả những đồn đãi ác ý về sự ăn theo của anh nhờ mối liên hệ với ca sỹ Như Quỳnh trên rất nhiều các diễn đàn trực tuyến. Và thật ấn tượng khi anh gạt bỏ những lời cạnh khóe ấy chỉ với thoáng mỉm cười. “Tôi đã làm việc cho PBN từ lâu. Trước đây, tôi là một vũ công cho các Trung tâm khác và chỉ một số ít ca sỹ bạn bè là biết tôi có thể hát tốt” – anh giảI thích với niềm đam mê cháy lên trong mắt- “Nhưng trong lĩnh vực giải trí, bạn chẳng thể nào làm hài lòng tất cả mọi người và bạn cần biết cách sống với tất cả những lời khen, chê, thậm chí là chỉ trích, bôi nhọ”. Lời tâm sự này cho ta thấy Huỳnh Gia Tuấn thừa thông minh để hiểu rằng con đường trở thành một ngôi sao không phải toàn hoa hồng và anh đã cương quyết đi theo sự lựa chọn của mình, chứng minh cho những người không ủng hộ anh rằng những thành công ban đầu của anh không phải chỉ là do may mắn. Huỳnh Gia Tuấn đã được Marie Tô chú ý đến giọng hát của mình nhờ nhạc sỹ Huỳnh Nhật Tân khi anh tự thu âm một album riêng của mình để bán tại các chương trình ca nhạc. Chính tại các buổi diễn này, Huỳnh Gia Tuấn đã làm việc cần mẫn rèn giũa kỹ thuật thanh nhạc, học hỏi thêm kinh nghiệm trình diễn cũng như thu hút sự chú ý của khán giả. Sinh ra tại Đồng Nai và lớn lên ở Vũng Tàu, Huỳnh Gia Tuấn trưởng thành từ một gia đình vẫn quan niệm “xướng ca vô loài”. Anh thổ lộ: “ Nhà tôi muốn tôi tập trung cho việc học nhưng tận sâu thẳm tôi biết rằng mọi người ủng hộ tôi theo một cách khác”. Khi còn nhỏ, anh theo học một vài lớp guitar và thanh nhạc với nhạc sĩ Trần Quảng Nam. Trong suốt những năm đi học, anh tham gia rất nhiều các cuộc thi và chiến thắng vô số các giải thưởng. “ Khi tôi trưởng thành một chút thì thần tượng cùa tôi chính là chị Như Quỳnh. Vì thế, khi tôi bắt đầu đi theo con đường ca hát thì thể loại nhạc của chị chính là lựa chọn của tôi. Nhưng rồi mọi người khuyên tôi rằng nhạc quê hương thật ra không phải là sở trường. Thế là tôi thử nghiệm với Pop và tham gia một số lớp khiêu vũ. Khi tôi học Đại học ở De Anza, Cupertino tôi đã chọn khiêu vũ là chuyên ngành phụ vì tôi thật sự rất hứng thú với môn học này. Chúng tôi thậm chí có giai đoạn khiêu vũ suốt 8 tiếng một ngày và 4 đến 5 ngày trong tuần”. Nhưng anh cũng không hoàn toàn từ bỏ niềm đam mê âm nhạc đầu tiên của mình: “Tôi sẽ thêm một chút âm hưởng dân ca trong những album tiếp theo của mình, một sự kết hợp của nhiều thể loại, thậm chí chỉ một bài trong album cũng có thể làm nên khác biệt vì chắc chắn người nghe cũng mệt mỏI nếu phải nghe một album toàn nhạc Pop. Nhưng ngay bây giờ, tôi đang nỗ lực hết mình để thành một ca sỹ Pop”. Chẳng mấy chốc cơ hội thật sự đã đến với Huỳnh Gia Tuấn ở Quận Cam và đó là dịp để anh theo đuổi niềm đam mê nghệ thuật của mình. Anh rời Thung Lũng Hoa Vàng để định cư tại Hollywood. Nhưng trong thời gian chưa được phát hiện, Huỳnh Gia Tuấn lại chìm đắm trong một đam mê khác của anh: thiết kế thời trang. Trả lời cho câu hỏi của tôi về việc anh sẽ chọn lĩnh vực nào, Huỳnh Gia Tuấn bộc bạch: “ Ca hát thì chỉ có thời và công việc thiết kế cũng giúp tôi thỏa mãn được những đam mê sáng tạo nghệ thuật của mình nhưng dĩ nhiên là bằng một cách khác”. Có thể chúng ta không biết nhưng chính anh đã thiết kế rất nhiều trang phục biễu diễn cũng như trang phục riêng cho các nghệ sỹ như Lương Tùng Quang, Như Quỳnh, Tâm Đoan, Phi Nhung, Thế Sơn. Trong phần trình diễn lần đầu của anh trên sân khấu PBN, anh đã thiết kế cho riêng toàn bộ trang phục cho các vũ công minh hoạ lấy cảm hứng từ sự vui nhộn và sặc sỡ của quần áo thể thao những năm 80. Vậy cảm giác chàng ca sỹ tự tin khi xuất hiện trên sân khấu PBN là như thế nào? “ Rất thú vị và căng thẳng . Đây là một điều rất đặc biệt với tôi vì đây là lần đầu tiên tôi xuất hiện trên PBN với tư cách là một ca sỹ. Tôi nghĩ rằng tôi thật sự may mắn vì đã có kinh nghiệm đúng trên sân khấu từ trước. Tôi biết rằng mình hoàn toàn sẵn sàng nhưng vẫn lo kinh khủng vì chẳng có kinh nghiệm nào có thể giúp bạn tự tin ngay khi bước lên một sân khấu lớn như của PBN”. Khán giả sẽ có cơ hội tự đánh giá khi cuốn video PBN số 84 sẽ được phát hành nay mai trong dịp Giáng sinh. Nhưng có một điều chắc chắn rằng, cả một tương lai tươi sáng đang chờ Huỳnh Gia Tuấn ở phía trước với tài năng và sự cầu tiến của anh. Dù anh rất thật thà và cởi mở trong suốt cuộc trò chuyện, tôi cũng vẫn có thể thấy được rằng đằng sau nụ cười và lớp vỏ bọc tự tin là một chàng trai trẻ đầy lo âu với quá nhiều những trải nghiệm và gian nan trong cuộc đời son trẻ của mình, một người biết trân trọng những cơ hội đã đưa anh đến ngày hôm nay. Paris By Night’s newest discovery talks to ThuyNgaOnline exclusively backstage at the taping of Paris By Night 84 in Atlanta as he awaits his turn for his stage debut. You’ll learn there’s more to this singer – dancer – designer “than meets the eyes”.

In an age of celebutante where the overexposed yet talent-anorexic beautiful people dominate the mass media it’s difficult not to be cynical. With his polished good looks and chiseled features, one could easily dismiss Huynh Gia Tuan as just another wannabe pretty boy treading the well worn path to celebritydom. But there’s something disarming to one’s preconceived prejudice when Huynh Gia Tuan turned up to our arranged interview, unfazed and ready for business, in a pair of worn shorts and simple tee – the very antithesis of a glamorous pop star.

I first met Huynh Gia Tuan backstage at the taping of Paris By Night 84 and watched as he busied himself with the ironing the dancer costumes for his debut performance and perhaps some nerves in the process. Prior to the taping of the show, I had heard a fair bit about this young singer from the showbiz grapevines, not to mention the spiteful gossips about favoritism and nepotism on various online forums in relations to his connection to Nhu Quynh. That’s an impressive feat for a singer that the public has yet to hear from but he dismiss the nasty innuendo with a mild chuckle. “Yes I’ve worked with Paris By Night before but the producers have no idea that I can sing or dance. In the past I have worked as a dancer for other productions and the only people who knew that I can sing are some of the singers that I hang out with”, he explains animatedly and with passion twinkling in his eyes. “But in this industry, you can’t please everyone and you need to take the positives, negative feedbacks as well as the cynics”. The comments say two things about Huynh Gia Tuan as a young singer and a person. They illustrate the fact that he’s wise enough to recognize that the road to stardom is laden with obstacles, some of which he has already experienced first hand. They also suggest that he’s more determined to achieve his goal to prove his detractors wrong now that he’s been given the much sought after opportunity.

For the record, Huynh Gia Tuan was brought to the attention of Marie To through musician and composer, Huynh Nhat Tan while the undiscovered singer was recording his independent, self funded album to sell at various live concerts. And through these live shows that Huynh Gia Tuan has been working hard the last couple of years honing his skills, obtaining more performing experience and getting exposure to audience. All the while the 22 year old has to contend with juggling a full time job and college, majoring in fashion design. “It’s been really difficult but this is my dream come true, this is my passion since I started performing at 3 years of age” he says perhaps with an air of relief complete with recognition that there’s still a long road ahead.

Born in Dong Nai and raised in Vung Tau, Huynh Gia Tuan was brought up in a traditionally conservative family where music is definitely not encouraged as a practical career pursuit. He confides, “They want me to focus on school but deep down I know that they support me in a different way”. In the early years, he dabbled in a bit of guitar lesson and some music classes here and there. During his high school years, Huynh Gia Tuan entered a number of performing contests and won several prizes and awards singing in country / folk style. “When I was growing up my idol was Nhu Quynh so when I first started out, that genre was my chosen path. But people advised me that country / folk doesn’t really fit me with my look and my age so I experimented with pop and attended dance classes. When I was in college at DeAnza in San Jose I minored in dance because I was enjoying it so much … we sometimes danced for up to eight hours a day, four to five days a week”, he recalled with fond memory but at the same time relief at not having to adhere to the arduous practice schedule. But he hasn’t completely deserted his first musical love, “I would love to do something folksy for one of my future albums, a fusion of different genres, even just one song on an album to make it sound different because it can get tiring listening to whole album full of pop. Right now I’m giving my own to establish myself as a pop artist”.

Soon enough, it was the available opportunities in Orange County and a chance to follow his artistic passion that forced Huynh Gia Tuan to abandon his home in the Silicon Valley and relocated to the bright lights of Hollywood. But while waiting to be discovered Huynh Gia Tuan has been immersing himself in his other creative passion – fashion design. “Singing is not going to last forever and both singing and design give you the same artistic satisfactions but in a different way”, sidestepping the persistent questions that he choose between either one of them. Audience may not be aware but Huynh Gia Tuan has designed several performance costumes for the like of Luong Tung Quang, Nhu Quynh, Tam Doan, Phi Nhung, The Son for both their performances on Paris By Night and personally. And for his debut performance on Paris By Night, Huynh Gia Tuan has personally designed the costumes for the backup dancers for his number “Girl”, inspired by the fun and colorful trends of the 80s sportswear.

So how does this confident singer approach his first performance on the Paris By Night stage? “Excited but very nervous”, he replied with an apprehensive laugh as I reassure him that he has nothing worry about and should be prepared to have the girls lining up for his autographs. “It’s a huge thing for me personally because it’s my first appearance on Paris By Night as a singer … I guess I’m lucky in the sense that I kind of have the experience having gone on shows previously … I know I’m ready but no what it’s still nerve wrecking because no amount of experience can prepare you for the big stage”. The audience will have the chance to judge for themselves when Paris By Night 84 is released shortly in time for Christmas. But certainly Huynh Gia Tuan definitely has a bright future ahead of him giving his abundant talent and the attitude of not taking anything for granted. Even though he was frank and open throughout the interview, one can’t help but feel that behind the dazzling smile and confident demeanor mask an anxious young man who’s been through a lot of trials and tribulations in his short life and is appreciative of the opportunities which have landed his way.
